Tangled Up In Wires

The importance of root cause analysis

Early one morning during a recent collaboration with a client seeking to establish a 5 year strategy, the client connected their laptop to the docking station on their desk and produced a guttural hmpf sound before any words were spoken. I looked over in curiosity to find the client feverishly entangled in spaghetti cabling while simultaneously shuffling cable connections. The client expressed an exasperated sigh dumping the cabling in a tanlged mess on the desk and bowing in capitulation. On equiring as to "what's up", the client explained they and another colleague had spent most of the previous day attempting to determine why the client's screens weren't working (no display). I raised in eyebrow in bemusment and advised the client i'd be delighted to assist on the (sarcastic) condition the client "pledge fealty" to EABITS. Somewhat befuddled, the client agreed to my request at which time I immediatly advised the root cause of the issue was their docking stations power adapter. Scoffing in disbelief, the client argued against my solution. I quickly grabbed another power adapater, connected it to their docking statiosn and euraka! Their screens were working again. The client was silent for a moment in absolute denial of the miracle that just occurred. However, the proof was evident and the client's disbelief quickly turned to conviction. In an act of (sarcastic) fealty, the client pledged their sword, shield and netflix password to EABITS and promptly sought out their colleague to inform them of the miracle they just witnessed.

Root cause analysis is a core competency at EABITS. Embedded into EABITS culture, root case analysis requires a blend of subject matter expertise aligned with critical thinking skills to move beyond treating symptoms and instead resolve the underlying factors that create recurring business, operational, or technology issues. At EABITS we apply root cause analysis to go beyond surface-level thinking, EABITS applies structural analytical methods to identify causal relationships, validate assumptions with evidence, and isolate the conditions that produce undesired outcomes. Embedding root cause analysis into our engagements promotes disciplined thinking, data-informed diagnosis, and solution designs that address systemic constraints facilitating sustainable change and value realisation.

EABITS distinguishes it's break-fix and solution services not by how quickly fixes can be applied, but how effectively issues can be identified coinciding with elimination of underlying causes of complex problems to stop problems from reappearing.
